Hi Anthony! Using a "0" is the same as typing "FALSE" and using a "1" is the same as typing "TRUE". Finding the closest match works fine in some situations with numbers but it's obvious we don't want to go that way in this scenario. You're right about the formula bar, that's an easy way to do simple queries and a good way to learn the syntax. That said, it blows when it comes to creating more complicated logic or nested IF statements.
Hey guys - if you check the write up of teh October Webmaster Q&A here you'll find this was raised as follows:
chrisff, palo alto, ca: Is the bounce rate and speed taken into account when ranking a page? i.e. if you see a searcher click on a result then return very quickly and choose another result, is the first page ranked lower?
JohnMu: Hi chrisff, assuming that users will be jumping out of a site like that, there's a high probability that they won't be willing to recommend it to others (or come back themselves). So yes, indirectly at least, if a site is made in a way that users run away right away, then chances are that we might not be recommending it as much as other sites that users like (and recommend to others).
Read into that however you like. In the meantime I'm going to desphinn the post. Too many gaping holes and not at all a proper test!
Oh, so it's ok to review the bar now? Hmmm. I guess it was obvious someone would go public. I was impressed by how fast it is, but there's some development required before it's a useful SEO tool. I've given that feedback and I know the Mozzers will deliver.
@bhartzer - hey good luck with your reasons that you won't go in to! If you need a plugin for Jobs, there's JobsPress which i have linked to from the article.
My 2c as follows. Anyone can write a crawler. Ok, it's NOT that easy but fundamentally - a piece of software that runs on a server that fetches data and stores it somewhere. It's the storage, analysis and recall of the data into meaningful reporting that is impressive. All of that number crunching requires some serious equipment to run on, serious development to create and perfect and serious money to make happen. I personally don't care if Linkscape uses lots of external data sources with or without their own crawl becuase I appreciate the additional tool at my disposal and I appreciate the level of work involved to get those reports to make any real world sense. There are some interesting similarities between Linkscapes metric results and Google serp positioning. It's a nice algo!
Hi Guys! All very interesting and useful comments. Just to clarify, rankings are obviously not the only KPI, which is why I referenced Eduard Blacquière's latest post on Joost's blog. Thanks!
Hey Eduard - as we discussed I liked your article, and it provided heaps of useful reading. Just one, small thing; the article title...
Measuring SEO: why rankings are worthless
Google have now removed the result, but I found another one this morning using exactly the same techique. That's clear evidence that the original removal was manual - and that there's currently no penalty on the Bebo domain even though they're clearly getting gamed on a regular basis!
It's amazing how nearly the entire universe suddenly forgot how to spell "LOSE" overnight. It's everywhere. "LOOSE" is like, "dude i think my trousers just came loose". as opposed to "Honey, don't lose your sandwich box again.."
Jeez!
Thanks Gab, it's incredible how bounce rate can reduce by more than 40% with some simple dynamic changes. Fun with blog bounce rates!!
@NickWilsdon hello mate - you're absolutely right to suggest this and I'm working on the custom code now - a category specific conditional SMO button display. As for a plugin, I personally really like cracking the code myself, it's so satisfying! I'll ping you a post when it's finished. Thank you!
I watched the episode
At the time of broadcast, i seem to remember the website had made around £4k in profit.
...
Fair comment! Good luck for the future. There's enough info on this site to get you sorted.
Hi Darren, bit late now but I'll give your article a Sphinn. How about that?
Agreed - very nice comments g1smd and thanks for dropping by! Really appreciate your input.
Heh! He's fixed it - without a comment (of course) on how impactful this issue really is to your Google SERPS, merely a "guinea pig" response! Note to self. Try harder next time! Get algo questions answered by Googlers!
@neyne - good last comment there neyne - really glad to see such good debate coming up from everyone.
Agreed - it's a nasty solution and rather volatile. I've found seo's who use wildcards always come across an unexpected problem later on. Solving one problem by creating another. "Last ditch SEO"
