Great list of tips! Pretty well outlines a strategic plan. And it's amazing how often we need to remind business clients that social media is all about participation, finding your niche, offering help, and providing good content that people will want to follow.
Participation really is the key. Too many people think they can just blindly rush in and get immediate success. Truth is, that's the quickest way to shoot yourself in the foot.
Tip #2 is so important. I used to just be a lurker. Now I'm finding out how rewarding it can be to actively participate and get quality feedback. Thanks for the list.
Number 9 is one of the most important things on the list. Because if you are all about just trying to make a name for yourself, you will not succeed without the backing of a community. Success with "social" media depends a lot on how helpful you are to others. Why would anyone want to help you, if you never lend a helpng hand yourself?
Eric,
Good stuff. From the old days of SEO we always tried to "fly under the radar", it's a hard habit to break.
I have one question and this has always kind of bugged me. In your first step you say:
"You need to find social media sites that fit your niche."
That statement seems very contradictory to me. A niche seems to suggest that there are not a lot of people out there that are into the same thing. Enough to generate some interest but not enough to carry an entire social media site. And even if there is, would there be enough content to keep it afloat.
I'm sure I'm not looking at this right but I hear this a lot and can't seem to grasp it. Where do I find a social media site for my "worm farming" business?
thanks,
Rock
Hey Rock,
The brevity of each point didn't leave me enough room to fully explain what I meant. What I mean by finding a social media site within your niche is this: For example, Sphinn is a site for internet marketing news and discussions. Submitting an article about the MLB playoffs on here wouldnt get you very far.
Here's a good list of some of the main social media news sites out there http://www.doshdosh.com/list-of-social-media-news-websites/
Great find! I enjoyed and learned a lot reading it..^^
You are absolutely correct. You have to participate and become a part of the community to use it effectively. You can't just expect to drop a link and stand back.
Maybe it’s not explicitly mentioned, but submitting content and becoming a purveyor of finding good content for others will help build authority.
Eric,
Thanks for the explanation. Once again, very helpful info here.
Rock
this is good idea for social media marketing.so this is really best..
