Google continues its supremacy, despite the clamor over emerging search engines attempting to dethrone it. These providers approach search from different perspectives (semantic, social, community-based) and present their results in fresh forms (design, layout, structure) in the hope that their new package will appeal more to the masses. However, it's apparent that search dominance is as much about branding, popularity, and financial backing as it is about relevance or looks.

Boiled down to the hard tacks of search, Google's supremecy is galvenized in this great article. Many of us thought that semantics and added relevance would turn the tide, but we were just wishing on a start that may never rise.

For the near future, unless someone hits the heart of "coolness", Google may dominate for years to come.

The problem, imho, is that none of them have an original perspective on what the problem is.

Cuil said it was presentation - G can and does regularly test new SERP layouts, looks etc.
Semantic SEs said it was algos - G regularly implements new ones.

The issue isn't about tactical differentiation (e.g. changing the means), but rather the differentiating on strategic vision - what is the purpose of a search engine? So long as you accept that it is 'to return the most relevant info' then you're going to be playing catchup to someone singing :

"Anything you can code, I can code better; Anything you can code, I can code too."
